Become a Doing Hearer of God's Word

As we believe God’s word we should not also forget to do or act on them. James 2:14 says we should not just have faith but demonstrate our faith by our deeds.
The wisest and safest thing to do as spoken of by our Lord Jesus Christ as he crowned his message on the mount is to be doing hearers of his word (Matt 7:24). The significance of being doers of the word of God is emphasized at several places in the Bible (James 1:22, Luke 11:28, Rom 2:13, 1 John 3:7…). Such a doer of God’s word is said to have a stable solid foundation as opposed to a loose one by just the hearer.

Have you ever thought of the number of preaching messages you’ve heard at church and elsewhere and the number you’ve rendered ineffective by not practicing, even though you might believe them? Many a time we are elated by the ‘powerful sermons’ that we hear or listen to but our joy become short-lived when later we are overwhelmed by some life’s problems that demand application of those sermons we hear.

Have you also wondered why many Christians, though reading and hearing God word for ages, are still going through trying times, frustrations, sicknesses, demonic afflictions, and the like? Part of the answer could be found in Jesus’ statement in Matt 7:27, that loose or shallow foundation caused by the uselessness of hearing God word is what overpowers them in times of adversities. But the wise builder is harmlessly hit by such adversities (Matt 7:25), because doing what he hears found him built upon a solid foundation of immovable rock.

We learnt in our previous quiet time that hearing God’s word only produces faith in us (Rom 10:17), a critical thing in our Christian growth, but faith without works is dead (James 2:17). It is not enough to hear the word of God but we should see the word producing results in our life. For instance just knowing that by His stripes you are healed won’t produce any result - it is by believing it and acting like it that produces the needed results.

The testimony shared in the quiet time on 23/04/09 gives a practical picture of what I’m talking about. His miracle came about as a result of not just knowing what the bible says about his health, but more so his belief on that specific word together with his action of confessing and rebuking that skin discoloration.

The word of God is living and active (Heb 4:12), it has the power to make us what it says therefore as we believe it lets know that our faith will only be made operative by acting or practicing them. God Bless you even as you act on what you’ve just read.
