THE HUMILITY OF CHRIST
“Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross” (Phil. 2:6 -8 KJV).

The seeds of Christ are also to emulate and manifest a life full of the very humility of Christ Jesus – a humility that would result in the salvation of other people. It is about looking not only to ourselves, but the things of others also, and about esteeming others better than ourselves (Phil 2:4, 5). Until we come to this place, we would not be able to exhibit the kind of humility our Lord Jesus exhibited on earth.

Before His incarnation, the person we now know as “Christ Jesus” was God – “The Word”, and was in heaven with the Father, living in His excellent glory as God! We know from John chapter 1 that He is the one who made all there is in the universe – without Him was not anything made that was made! He was God even as the Father is God! Now man who had been created in the image and likeness of God had surrendered himself and his dominion to Satan, and had gone to be one nature with him. God could have saved man out of His sovereignty, yet not wanting to tamper also with His justice, a full price had to be paid for the sin of man.

Only a person without sin (by default) could save man out of sin, and God the Word decided out of love to leave His throne and glory in heaven to come and save us! Christ Jesus was so humble – He being God, came to the world in the likeness of ‘sinful man’ (flesh), and made Himself of no reputation. He put away His glory, dignity and throne, and became a servant to people that He had created Himself, just for the salvation of men. Many purported to offend Him in His earthly walk, and earthly rulers judged His case and condemned Him. Indeed He could have just raised His hand at a point in time and all His persecutors would have just sunk into the deep. Yet, He humbled Himself. On the cross, people insulted Him and spit on Him. And when the creator of water asked for water, He was given ‘bitter’.

Christ could have spoken a word on the cross and He would have gotten down from the cross. But that wouldn’t have fulfilled His role as the one who is paying for the sins of men. The entire sin of the world was placed on Him (on the cross), and He suffered spiritual death (separation from God). He went to Hell as a sinner; God who created the whole world and all there is in it! He did not go to hell as God (so powerful and at whose sight all demons run away); the everlasting punishment for our sin was laid upon Him in that short while, and He was raised by God on the third day. He was so humble to go through all of these for the salvation of sinful men!

It is so sad that most of the young people of today think that they are too big for God’s use. Some think they are too beautiful to just be doing the work of God. Others believe they are too intelligent or strong and better fit to do other “important and dignifying” jobs than to preach God’s word to other people. Listen, if God was able to greatly humble Himself for the salvation of sinful men, how bigger can a creation be than the creator – making him or her too big for the use of his or her creator?

Dear friend, the humility that Christ exhibited is what God is calling us to emulate and manifest in this life. In fact that is the essence of our salvation; that we would save others with Christ’s kind of humility. Let us hold fast to this ultimate humility, just as we have held on to Christ’s kind of mindset.

PRAYER

Dear Father, I thank you for your great love towards me. I thank you for the limitless love of Christ which propelled Him to die for my salvation. Lord Jesus, I’m grateful to you that you became so very humble, just for my salvation. I ask father for grace and strength in my spirit, to live daily full of your kind of humility. Help me to be more and more humble so I can reach out to the world with your salvation just as Christ reached me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
